First draft Intro to Clip Writing Tutorial #introclipwritingtutorial
joy8388608
I wore out my little fingers creating a basic introduction and sales brochure so we can lure\entice\encourage new people into the wonderful world of NoteTab clips. It's basic but it's supposed to be. I wish it were available to me when I first started.
I uploaded the file. The name is NoteTab Intro to Clip Writing.txt I'm sure you will all have comments. :) Update on outlines. After I noticed NT Light could open outline files, I found it could not edit them. They are locked as read only. I have a clip which can convert an outline document to a normal text doc and another that can gather the topics and move them all to hyperlinks at the top of the document. This, of course, can be edited normally by anyone. I'm sticking to the outline file for now. Again, it is NOT a good idea for anyone to modify their personal copies because any updated versions will NOT have their notes. Joy |

There is a more important difference between Pro and Std/free - the input parser is different. SOME clips won't work except with Pro - I have had all my users switch to pro so they don't run into that problem. The input parser is how the program gets characters into the stream. Clips sometimes depend on that difference. I would not have any idea how to work around that.

I would have to search for that. I will, but I'm pretty busy on something else right now.

I uploaded a new (second) version of the Clips Tutorial with a HUGE update in the Subroutine topic. I'm sure I checked "Notify Members" but I'm not sure a notice went out. Did it? I deleted the original file and uploaded the new version with the same name. If I did everything correctly, I wonder if something unexpected happened. Or didn't happen.. Thanks Joy |

I'm sure I checkedI got notification of the update and your message about it about 40 minutes ago. Both came in at just about the same time. Thanks for your hard work. Pro does not support proportional fonts among other things. NTB is the only program I have ever heard of that the Pro version is not a superset of the standard version. There are two commands that return the version and variant of the current Notetab exe: ^$GetProgName$ Returns the full name of the NoteTab variant, e.g., "Notetab Std" ^$GetProgVersion$ Returns the current version number. Not sure what feature(s) in Pro that you are referring to but the typical work around is to test for the current version and code within the capabilities of that environment. Art |

I really wish you hadn't done that. We really need version identification on file uploads. Publishing different versions under identical names will just lead to chaos. I strongly urge you to rename your upload to include (at least) first & second level version numbers. Even if there is only one file version displayed it needs a version ID. Art |

Is it hardwired into NTB or just an initial doc setting? If it is the latter I have a clip that will create and open an OTL file ready for editing. Art |

the date, as in 'name-20191221.clb'. Users can immediately tell when something is updated. Of course, I use OneDrive to share them, which means when I update them, they appear on my user's computers automatically, if they have chosen to sync the folder. The versions also sort nicely... I've had my own GIO groups for about 2 years now. I don't have any message

distribution issues in my groups, but I have noticed problems with this group - some messages never get sent. There must be something, somewhere, that is blocking, because when I log into the group, I see messages I never received, even ones where I started the topic. I started one topic, got one response, then logged in and saw there were 7 responses - 6 of which I never received, ever. Not suggesting that anyone is doing something wrong, just that there seems to be some kind of hang up with this group. Regards, John -----Original Message-----

Although NT light can open and use an outline normally, it is locked read-only. Really locked. You cannot uncheck the read-only setting.
As I stated, my Clips to convert it into a regular document worked fine but there is no need since it is meant to be in outline form and should not be edited anyway. See my additional comments in my reply to the version issue message. Joy |

Publishing different versions under identical names will just lead to chaosWhile I fully agree with you for most uploads, I have given this a lot of thought and do not agree. I am careful to update the changelog at the top of the document. I also note dates and changes in the file comment section when uploading (replacing) so it is easy to tell when the file was last updated by looking at the list of files. The file itself should not be changed after being downloaded. It is up to the users to periodically check the file section to see if there is a later version. (It would help if the file upload notification starts working properly.) They would have to periodically look for new versions anyway even if we did have multiple versions of the same document. I see no need to keep older drafts. Joy |
